Hi David. You can read all about this in the excellent book "Showstopper" by G. Pascal Zachary. It chronicles the development of Windows NT from well before it even was thought to be Windows compatible (that requirement came long ways into the development).

This book is about the technology as well as the key personell making it. I highly reccommend it!
